Should I take up match fishing or carp fishing or pleasure fishing ? ? ? When I took up fishing at four years old that's exactly what I did went fishing, no pre- planning with regards to disciplines or species. My neighbour uncle Brian , they were all uncles or aunties back then was always so enthusiastic about fishing always mashing bread or digging for worms. I think it was to stop me constantly asking what he was doing all the time that he asked me if I would like to go fishing. Permission granted by my dad saw me bleary eyed one Saturday morning at five o'clock sat on the back of a huge B.S.A motorbike with sidecar attached full of wicker basket seat box, rods, nets etc roaring off with me clinging on to his huge belstaff coat Now I don't know if it was half fear / half thrill of the motor bike ride that made me feel so awake or watching the red tip of the float disappear as another plump roach snatched the bread flake hookbait presented over mashed bread, but I was well and truly hooked on fishing. I really didn't care what fish I caught right up to my teens as long as a float quivered and then slid away or the tip was pulled round it was just all so much fun, don't get me wrong if it was a bigger fish than the norm I was always thrilled, it was the days when I didn't catch that for some strange reason began to interest me more. "The Barnsley Blacks", when you live in barnsley as I do and fish, no matter what path you chose to follow these guys have set the benchmark. Deservedly highly praised in match fishing circles yet quite adept at amassing huge weights pleasure fishing or catching specimen sized fish as Dick Clegg did, when you fish shoulder to shoulder with these guys something of worth is eventually acquired. We all pleasure fished or practiced on the same local waters, got the p**s taken out if we fell in or spent fifteen minutes playing the biggest fish of the day eventually a carrier bag and wishing you'd never kept repeating how big it was but what a bunch of guys to be around. Just look at the picture I took of Dennis White above, he still has the same grin and displays the same level of finesse and pleasure of fishing now as he did when in his teens. I only ever fished in a match twice in my whole fishing career, do I regret that? possibly, you tend to ponder from time to time where it would have taken you. I just couldn't accept that when you drew a peg and looked at the swim you were presented with it just was not the best place to be with regards to features, wind direction depth of water etc. Destined to be a specialist angler from the start I guess, too much thinking not enough doing but along the line somewhat maybe the best thing for me personally. Trouble is if the choices I made had been delayed for a while, and had I soaked up some of the vast match fishing knowledge from the individuals and teams around me, who knows what may have been. After all a lot of these guys could catch 100 lb from a teardrop. To be continued . |
